I’d originally signed up to the UX training but it was cancelled due to lack of interest. I swapped to the Module Development training run by Lullabot. The Lullabot team were really good, Jeff Eaton and Joe.
The morning started off pretty slowly as the guys explained about Drupal and how it worked. I was keen to move on to the module development. I was pleased that I’d been doing a bit of swatting on by reading Learning Drupal 6 Module Development, http://www.packtpub.com/drupal-6-module-development/book
It’s a good book to get started with by the way.
By lunch time I was confident about writing my own basic modules and could begin to see how I could implement some of the ideas in to current projects.
The afternoon session was getting a little tougher as we began to see some more examples of what we could manipulate in Drupal using modules.
We had a quick look the Form API, which was getting a little ‘Janky’, an Americanism, with the form validation settings.
Summary
I was impressed with the Lullabot guys. They were happy to stop and answer questions and seeing them come up with new ideas on the fly and try to implement them gave us first hand insight of experienced Drupalers in action. Often things didn’t go to plan first time so we even saw how they trouble shooted problems and chased down errors.
The training itself started off too slowly, and then the sessions toward the end of the day seemed a little rushed. I would have preferred to have skipped the basics and jumped straight in to exploring more complex issues.
Overall I guess the test will be if I continue my learning of module development, and I’m confident that I now have the tools I need to get started.
