New Google and Microsoft releases: Wave and Bing

Here's the latest offerings from the 2 biggest players in computing.

At the Google I/0 conference recently google announced one it's most ambitious projects to date, Google Wave. A real-time collaboration and communication platform that combines email, instant messaging, and more. Described as 'Email if it was invented today.'

Quite simply go and watch the video to find out why Google Wave is going to revolutionise not only our email but also the way we work.

Bing - The consensus suggests that Bing is an acronym for 'Bing Is Not Google'.

Here's the marketing bit from Microsoft:

Bing is a new world of search services. It provides users with a powerful way to cut through the clutter and make more informed decisions.

Among its new features:

  • Instant Answers: finds specific answers to informational queries, e.g. "What is 55F in Celsius" offers rich media and structured data and a general search term like “weather” yields a 5-day forecast for your location.

  • Preview: enables searchers to find out more information about a site by previewing individual results on the results page to reduce back-and-forth searching.

  • Best Match: delivers results with deep links and highly relevant information to help searchers to get the right information faster.

So what does this mean to you? The API provides webmasters and developers programmatic access to Bing, offering ever more open, flexible options for building or enhancing your site or applications. Maybe I'm not getting it, maybe I need to be shown a You Tube video that demonstrates why Bing should be something I need to use.

Maybe I'm just too excited about Google Wave that I'm just not bothered.
